Ornithology and Wildlife Camp
Students grades 8 – 12
Course Cost - $4000
OceansWide Mountains to the Sea Ornithology and Wildlife Camp – A bit out of the norm for our marine based camps, but birds are such a huge part of the marine ecosystem that it just would not be right to exclude them. This is an opportunity to observe Maine birds and wildlife from the mountains of Northern Maine at Baxter State Park to the shores of Acadia National Park and offshore to see birds interacting with whales as they feed and frolic in the Gulf of Maine.
If you’re flying in or driving we will meet in Bangor, and caravan up to Big Moose Inn where we will stay the first few days to view Maine’s north woods and the birds that are most unique to the area. Later in the week we will join the staff at Schoodic Institute deep in the heart of Maine’s Acadia National Park. While here we will learn the importance of avian research from Schoodic Institute’s own ornithologist Seth Benz. There will be guided tours, observation and documentation of local
birds, but this is much more than your typical bird watchers adventure. We will collaborate with Seth and other researchers who will use the data collected during the week to support avian citizen science developed by Acadia National Park. This data helps us to gage the health of the local and migratory bird populations and see how climate is effecting their/our world. Later in the week we will visit one or more offshore bird nesting sites to observe the birds in their natural island habitat. We will travel a bit further offshore as well with our friends at Bar Harbor Whale Watch to see an assortment of marine birds and animals interacting with nature in the deep-sea.
