About the OceansWide Programs
For the Students:
Welcome to OceansWide. We have adventures and challenges
waiting for you.
- Explore the ocean
- Fly an ROV
- SCUBA dive
- Join scientists in their research
All of our programs are worked through
your school, so be sure to talk to your parents and to your
teachers if
you
are interested in OceansWide.
What we offer to schools is
a chance for you to join up with scientists aboard
our ship,
help with projects, design your own project, and learn
about the ocean.
The Boat: We’ll provide a boat and training so that
you can enjoy spending time at sea learning basic ships operations
such as steering, navigation, deck and engine room safety
and operations. Our trainers are experts and will teach you
all that you need to know to enjoy a safe and exhilarating
day at sea. If you’ve sailed often or if you’ve
never been to sea in your life, we’ll show you everything
you need to know; including our safety class and our onboard
procedures. This part may seem like being in the classroom
since we want to make sure that everyone is safe and that
we are all prepared in case of an emergency. We will show
you how to put on the cold water survival suit. You will
want to have your camera along when you see your friends
dressed up in orange Gumby suits. At OceansWide, even our
classroom time is fun. You will never guess that spending
a day with us actually counts as science class!
The ROV: The best part, and probably the least understood, is our
ROV. The ROV is a remotely operated vehicle, which
means we (and you) can fly a complicated piece of equipment
below the sea, taking pictures, picking up samples, and letting
you see and “feel” what’s deep in the water,
without ever having to get wet. With our ROV, you will see,
first hand, the deep water ecosystems, midwater and benthic.
You will fly to the ocean floor and explore places where
your family has most likely fished, but never gets to see.
With this robotic submarine you will have the opportunity
to find treasures greater than you ever imagined. You will
learn to fly the ROV using joysticks and keyboards, just
like the video games you play at home.
The Science: With OceansWide,
you will connect with the world of ocean science. You will
work with scientists from
around the world who will bring with them stories and adventures
that will certainly explain science in a way that will
capture your imagination. We will take you to places where
you might
be the first person in the world to see strange new creatures
that will definitely capture your interest. Depending on
what program you choose, you can either participate with
scientists on their project or develop your own project.
The
History: Our programs will launch off the coast
of Maine. From here, you will experience
the
depths of coastal Maine and discover the secrets and treasures
long forgotten from hundreds of years of maritime history.
You will be among the first to unfold the stories that
lurk beneath these waters that you call home and see the
mysteries
that until now were only myths.
SCUBA diving: OceansWide
offers you a chance to get your feet (and the rest of
your body) wet. You will have an opportunity to see
what great fun and adventure SCUBA diving can be in a one
day program that shows
you the
basics of SCUBA diving and allows you to get in the water
in full gear, using a regulator to breathe air from a tank
as you swim with the fishes and explore the harbor.
Get
a jump start on your life and see the all the wonderful
opportunities you have to make a difference in your community,
your state, and your life.
If you are interested in our
programs, you can contact us at info@oceanswide.org. We
can send you and your parents,
as well as your school, information about our programs
and how you can participate. We look forward to hearing from
you soon.
