Support Vessel Needed

Our immediate plan is the acquisition of a Maine-built lobster boat to carry our small and medium sized ROVs which will be utilized in the research, design and testing aspect of our OceansWide program. We will acquire a safe, sturdy and able vessel such as the reputable Young Brothers boats from Corea, Maine shown here.

For more information on these fine boats please have a look at their website:

The next stage requires a much larger vessel. OceansWide is proud to present Mr. Jake, which is an excellent example of the optimal at-sea classroom and ROV support ship. At 44 meters long and 8.5 meters wide, this supply and crew boat is capable of carrying 70 passengers in her current configuration. The vessel has the capacity to house a full ROV control room, sustain an at-sea class room for 30 students and host a complement of science laboratories.

Ideal for meeting our mission, this style of ship assures that OceansWide program researchers and students will spend maximum time at the desired study site to enjoy the research opportunities and educational adventures in the Gulf of Maine. Reaching a top speed of 26 knots, aluminum hull ships like the Mr. Jake are lightweight yet durable. Because consumption of natural resources is reduced and both speed and efficiency are increased, the design assures that OceansWide can keep costs low and lessen the impact on our ocean environment.

For the use of this image, OceansWide thanks Gulf Craft Inc., of Patterson, Louisiana, builders of Mr. Jake and other fine vessels. www.gulfcraft.com

As always we need and sincerely appreciate your support. Your gift toward the purchase of our support ship will hasten the implementation of our program for scientists and students across Maine. Please visit our donation page and give generously.
